Morocco set to reintroduce wheat import duties

29/05/2019,

On 22 May, the Government announced the reintroduction of the import duty on common wheat at 135 percent, after a suspension from January to April 2019. The country revises the duties on a periodic basis depending on the supply/demand situation in the country. During the harvest from May to July, duties are usually increased to protect the local producers. The tariffs on wheat imports aim to promote the sale of the local harvest, which this year is expected to decrease to 4.9 million tonnes from 7.3 million tonnes gathered in 2018, almost 20 percent down from the average of the past five years due to dry weather conditions (GIEWS Country Brief).
