19/12/2023

23 November 2023, Bogota, Colombia (Hybrid). The Development Law Service of FAO’s Legal Office (LEGN) participated in a workshop aimed at enhancing the conceptual understanding of agroecology so as to support its implementation through legislation. The workshop was part of a series of events focusing on the Human Right to Food and Agrifood Systems. The central aim of the workshop was to foster discussions on the importance of advancing specific regulations to drive the transition toward agroecology. It targeted advisors from the Legislative Work Unit of the Colombian Congress.

During the event, Manuela Cuvi, LEGN’s outposted Legal Officer, addressed the essential elements that should be incorporated into legislation to promote agroecology. Her presentation was based on the recommendations outlined in the publication titled “Legislating to Promote Agroecology in the Latin America and the Caribbean Region - Guidelines for a model law from PARLATINO on agroecology” (Available only in Spanish).

The workshop was organized by the Colombian Congress and the Parliamentary Front Against Hunger, in collaboration with FAO Colombia, Mesoamerica Hunger Free Program, the Mexican Agency for International Development Cooperation (AMEXCID), Hunger-Free Latin America and the Caribbean Initiative (IALCSH), the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), the DRET II Program, and the European Union.

In a broader context, FAO is providing technical assistance to the Latin American and Caribbean Parliament (PARLATINO) to formulate a regional model law on Agroecology. This collaborative effort seeks to establish the foundations for legal frameworks that encourage the transition to sustainable and resilient agrifood systems in the region.
