LEGN made a presentation on the right to food, environment and agrifood systems at the University of Valparaíso

20/12/2023

13 December 2023, Valparaíso, Chile (hybrid). The Development Law Service of the FAO Legal Office (LEGN), through FAO‘s Representation in Chile, participated in a round table on “Protection of the right to food in the context of environmental preservation and sustainable food systems”. This was organized by the Faculty of Nutrition and Dietetics of the University of Valparaíso.

Carolina Flores Barros, International Legal Consultant, LEGN, spoke about the importance of transforming agrifood systems to make them more sustainable and inclusive, in order to guarantee the progressive enjoyment of the right to adequate food. She supported her argument with reference to the international treaties that enshrine this right, notably the Voluntary Guidelines on Food Systems and Nutrition adopted by the Committee on World Food Security in 2021.

FAO, through LEGN, was invited to participate in this event thanks to the close and productive collaboration it enjoys with the Observatory of the Right to Food in Latin America and the Caribbean (ODA). This network brings together more than 90 universities belonging to 17 Latin American and Caribbean countries, who work towards the elimination of hunger and malnutrition to achieve the 2030 Agenda, particularly its Sustainable Development Goal 2, Zero Hunger.
