LEGN participates in food loss and waste exchange mission between Costa Rica and Cuba

San Jose, Costa Rica - 8 April 2024The FAO Development Law Service (LEGN) participated in an initiative led by the FAO Representation in Costa Rica, which received delegates from the Cuban governments central provinces. This exchange mission focused on sharing experiences regarding the implementation of public policies and regulatory frameworks related to food and nutrition security. Mr H. Munoz of LEGN presented the Voluntary Code of Conduct for the Reduction of Food Loss and Waste, and described the efforts made in Latin American and Caribbean countries to implement the Code, providing a valuable platform for knowledge exchange. 

FAO has spearheaded and supported various efforts in the region to legislate to support the prevention and reduction of Food Loss and Waste (FLW) through publications, including: Legislative Advances on the Prevention and Reduction of Food Loss and Waste in Latin America and the Caribbean,(Available only in Spanish); the legal guidance note for parliamentarians in Latin America and the Caribbean No.10 Legislating to Prevent and Reduce Food Loss and Waste,.Technical assistance to PARLATINO was also provided to develop Model Law for the Prevention and Reduction of Food Loss and Waste (Available only in Spanish). These efforts underscore the regions commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals, especially Goal 12.3 to halve food losses by 2030.
