©FAO/Giulio Napolitano
8 April 2015--- This story by Williams A Moi is about the depletion of spear grass reserves, a very useful material in low cost housing construction in northern Uganda. This kind of grass, which grows in the wild in Uganda’s soils, is mainly used in the construction of low cost grass thatched houses in Uganda which are meant for the poor people who can’t afford iron sheets roof. The spear grass takes a yearlong to grow in the wild before it is matured and cut off using sickles, a device used for housing construction.
