The Commission has overseen the preparation of global assessments of the world’s plant and animal genetic resources for food and agriculture and the elaboration of global plans of action and other instruments for their conservation and sustainable use, and for access and benefit sharing. It provided the forum for negotiations that established other international instruments, such as the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture.

The Commission has developed a Multi-Year Programme of Work that recognizes the inter-relatedness of all components of biodiversity for food and agriculture – plant, animal, aquatic, forest, invertebrate and micro-organism genetic resources. This 10-year plan includes steps toward the preparation of an inclusive strategic assessment: The State of the World’s Biodiversity for Food and Agriculture. © FAO/J. Van Acker
