Improving governance of tenure of land, fisheries and forests

The Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security, known as the VGGT, promote secure tenure rights and equitable access to land, fisheries and forests. Their overarching goals are to achieve food security for all, and support the progressive realization of the right to adequate food. Liberia, Mongolia and Sierra Leone are among the first countries to make significant progress in implementing the VGGT. Maintaining government commitment and the general momentum around the VGGT is key to ensuring their internalization, and related processes in national programmes.

Goal

The project assists in identifying and strengthening the innovative approaches adopted by the three target countries, to put the VGGT principles into practice. This sets an inspiring example for others, and creates a space for a two-way dialogue among countries and at global level.

Impact

The project supports countries in improving the governance of tenure of land, fisheries and forests. This contributes to the eradication of hunger and poverty, and to sustainable development and sustainable use of the environment.

Approach

The project aims to capitalize on the successes achieved by the three target countries during the first phase of its implementation. The second phase focuses on achieving country-level results, while maintaining a global profile in terms of dialogue, and the development and dissemination of capacity-building materials. The activities include:

  • preparing, distributing and promoting the use of documentation and communication material on VGGT implementation;
  • developing and publishing a technical guide on VGGT implications for spatial planning;
  • promoting VGGT implementation by strengthening and developing the capacity of VGGT institutional settings in the three target countries;
  • identifying and protecting customary tenure rights in Sierra Leone;
  • increasing general public capacity to participate in tenure governance in Liberia; and
  • supporting the development of the pastoral land law in Mongolia.
