Human Rights Council to Hold its 49th Session from 28 February to 1 April 2022

The Human Rights Council this morning opened its forty-ninth regular session.

Over the coming five weeks, the Council will discuss areas covered by FAO´s mandate, from the right to food to socio-economic development issues. More than 130 Member States are expected to address the Council.

Agenda of main events related to FAO´s work

  • 9 March:  Annual discussion on rights of the child
  • 10 March: Interactive Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on Environment
  • 11 March: Interactive Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food. 
  • 14 March: Annual debate on rights of persons with disabilities
  • 22 March: Panel on public policies on COVID-19

About the Human Rights Council

The HRC is the principal inter-governmental forum within the UN for questions relating to human rights. It is responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights around the globe and for addressing situations of human rights violations and make recommendations on them.

The Council is made up of 47 United Nations Member States which are elected by the UN General Assembly. It was established in 2006 and meets at the UN Office at Geneva.

FAO is the only UN Agency sharing a specific mandate reflected in the Special Procedures of the UN OHCHR, namely the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food.

FAO has a Liaison Office in Geneva that assists in the development and implementation of FAO policies and decisions concerning FAO cooperation with the UN system, as well as with other international organizations.
