GIEWS Workstation Release 3.0

The EC-FAO Food Security Information for Action Programme is pleased to inform you that the basic release of the new generation of the Global Information and Early Warning System (GIEWS) Workstation (version 3.0 - Basic) is now available for download at the following URL:

http://ldvapp07.fao.org:8031/FenixUserWiki/index.php/Main_Page#Downloads_and_Installation

Both Windows and Linux installers are available.

It is strongly recommended that after the installation you download and import the GIS layers made available from the Downloads page.

The GIEWS Workstation is an information system application that handles a large variety of early warning- and food security-related information (GIS layers, satellite images, text, news, statistical and time series data, pictures, and more). The tool allows users to efficiently access information and to easily perform data analysis just by using their web browser.

The GIEWS Workstation is conceived of as a network that facilitates data sharing among the various workstations (GIEWS Workstation nodes) installed in national and international institutions. A Communication Tool associated with each individual node is key to the smooth functioning of the network as it facilitates the exchange of messages and data among GIEWS Workstation nodes. Seamless data exchange is possible thanks to the extensive use of international standards for coding information and exporting data in widely used formats. With this new approach, users will have access to subnational-level data generated and maintained by originators (e.g. national institutions) and will be able to efficiently disseminate data to all members of the network.

Version 3.0 of the GIEWS Workstation has been entirely redesigned with respect to previous versions using state-of-the-art open-source technologies in line with new web development trends. The new Workstation is designed to incorporate a wide range of analytical and reporting tools that can be developed and customized to meet users’ needs. It also includes improved dynamic data management and sharing tools. The Basic release includes some of the Workstation's main features, which will be added to and improved in future releases.

More detailed information on the GIEWS Workstation 3.0 is available in the Workstation Wiki at http://ldvapp07.fao.org:8031/FenixUserWiki/index.php/Main_Page
