El Programa del Censo Agropecuario Mundial ofrece apoyo y orientación a los países en la elaboración de censos agrícolas nacionales. Los datos recogidos proporcionan una visión general de la situación del sector agrícola de un país, desde el tamaño de sus explotaciones agrícolas, la tenencia de la tierra, el uso de la tierra , el área cultivada, la irrigación, el ganado, el trabajo y otros factores agrícolas. Esta información es vital en la planificación e implementación de políticas, investigación y desarrollo y monitoreo del impacto de la agricultura en el medio ambiente.
A lo largo de 10 años, la FAO ha desarrollado una nueva serie de directrices que implican un número de avances que tienen en cuenta la naturaleza cambiante del uso y recolección de datos. Las nuevas tecnologías de recolección de datos se han introducido para reducir drásticamente el tiempo que transcurre entre la recolección y el análisis de los datos. Campos de datos adicionales han sido incluidos/ propuestos, tales como la pesca y la emisión de gases de efecto invernadero para facilitar el seguimiento y el cumplimiento de los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS). Entre las nuevas metodologías propuestas, hay también un enfoque renovado para evaluar la seguridad alimentaria mediante la revisión de la gravedad de la inseguridad alimentaria experimentada por los individuos en la población.

Structural data from agricultural censuses (FAOSTAT analytical brief 83)
The new FAOSTAT domain structural data from agricultural censuses has been set up to disseminate data collected in national censuses of agriculture. The structural data in the domain includes the size and number of holdings, holder gender, land tenure, legal status of holders, and farm labour, among others. The censuses of agriculture are conducted under the FAO’s World Programme for the Census of Agriculture (WCA), which is a decennial programme. This brief covers the period 1990-2010.
