Objective and Scope

FAO/RAF's Regional Library was established in the early 1950's with specific objectives which include the following:

a) providing essential information, data and reference for the work of FAO Regional staff.

b) Furnishing information and data on the Organization's activities, especially on FAO's executed projects in the countries of the region concerned, to government officials, agricultural institutions, etc

c) Assisting FAO's field staff to have access to source material and data beyond their immediate reach.

d) Assisting bona fide and qualified users seeking information on FAO activities.

e) Due to lack of adequate agricultural libraries in the country, the Regional Office library serves as an effective reference centre for University students, teaching institutions and other agricultural sectors and Research Centres.

f) As a Regional Centre for Africa in agriculture, providing a lot of information on request to agriculturists and agricultural institutions in the sub-region.

The Library of the Regional Office has more than 20 000 volumes, titles and periodicals, the contents of which reflect the activities of FAO in the field of food and agriculture, economics, statistics, fisheries, forestry and nutrition.

The publications available include:

    • Annual statistics on production and trade, forestry, fishery year books, and State of Food and Agriculture.
    • Copies of all reports presented by FAO and RAF experts in their specialized fields.
    • A collection of technical periodicals in all FAO field of interest.

The library reference collection includes encyclopedias, technical terminology bulletins, published by the organization in different fields of agriculture and allied subjects.

The library was established basically for the use of RAF staff. But it is now serving post-graduate students (M.Sc and Ph.D) research workers, both at the individual and institutional levels.

The library contributes substantially towards one of FAO's main tasks: the dissemination of information on various aspects of food and agriculture. It puts at the disposal of those interested in the activities of FAO, in the Near East Region, a wide range of FAO and non FAO technical publications.
