The Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México (UAEMéx) is a public university, founded in 1828 as the Instituto Literario del Estado de México to promote higher education and intellectual development in the state. The institution expanded its academic scope and was officially established as a university in 1956, when it gained autonomy and adopted its current name.
