The Universidad para el Desarrollo Andino (UDEA), the first bilingual university in Peru (Quechua and Spanish), was founded in 1998 by the Asociación San Javier del Perú, directed by the nun Mother Luz María Álvarez Calderón Fernandini. After four years, CONAFU granted it temporary permission to operate as a university.
