Creating Web of Life through Natural Farming - APCNF - Sri Satya Sai District
A hard, unproductive plot in Andhra Pradesh has become a diversified farm producing cotton, pulses, vegetables, fruit and other crops after four years under natural farming. This video follows Ramaji and Rajini, a farming family who began experimenting on just 20 cents of land through the Andhra Pradesh Community Managed Natural Farming (APCNF) programme. Their experience illustrates how crop diversification and locally prepared natural farming inputs are being used to restore soil functions while reducing reliance on synthetic fertilizers and pesticides.
The video explains these changes through the soil food web: diverse plants release different root exudates that support bacteria, fungi and other soil organisms, which in turn contribute to nutrient cycling, soil structure and water infiltration. Ramaji reports improved soil moisture retention during dry periods and higher cotton yields after adopting natural farming, alongside multiple harvests from intercropped fields. These results reflect the farmer’s reported experience rather than findings from a controlled comparative study.
The family also describes changes in household income and food security, including regular earnings from selling vegetables and greater capacity to meet expenses. Their story highlights APCNF’s approach of combining scientific concepts with knowledge from natural farming practitioners, agricultural specialists and local farmer innovators. It presents diversified natural farming as a means of rebuilding soil biological activity while potentially strengthening farm resilience and livelihoods.
