Webinar #13: Beyond synthetic fertilizers – building resilient food systems in an era of uncertainty
Global disruptions to fertilizer supply chains, rising input costs and increasingly severe weather events are exposing the vulnerabilities of food systems dependent on fossil fuels and synthetic agrochemicals. In this webinar, Beyond Synthetic Fertilizers: Building Resilient Food Systems in an Era of Global Uncertainty, representatives of the Global Alliance for the Future of Food, the Agroecology Coalition and agroecology initiatives in India, Kenya, Italy, Brazil and Senegal examine how agroecological and natural farming approaches can strengthen resilience, reduce external input dependence and support food sovereignty.
Contributions from Kenya, Sicily, Brazil and Senegal highlight complementary priorities, including farmer training, local production of biological inputs, territorial markets, policy reform and improved agricultural education. Panellists also discuss the climate implications of synthetic fertilizer use, the importance of research into potential health benefits, and the need to align public investment, finance and market incentives with agroecological transitions. The discussion emphasizes context-specific solutions, farmer participation and stronger evidence to support wider adoption.
