A seasoned Agricultural Economist with over two decades of experience in agricultural research, policy analysis, and technical assistance across Africa, contributing significantly to developing and transforming agrifood systems.
Since joining the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in 2010, Paulo Dias has held several strategic roles at the FAO headquarters in Rome and the field. His experience includes serving as Head of the Operations and Coordination Unit at FAO Malawi, Project Manager, Lead Economist, Technical Advisor, and Institutional Focal Point for the Global Framework on Water Scarcity in Agriculture’s Working Group on Water and Nutrition.
Before joining FAO, Paulo Dias held various leadership and advisory roles with prominent institutions, including the African Economic Research Consortium in Nairobi, the World Food Programme in Rome, and the University of Rome in Italy, where he worked as a researcher. He also served as a Statistician at Mozambique's National Institute of Statistics. He worked as a Consultant for multiple international organizations and NGOs across Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and Latin America.
His expertise spans programme management, research, economic and statistical analysis, and Impact Evaluation of Development Programmes and Projects.
Paulo Dias holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Rome, Italy, and a Master's and Bachelor's degree in Statistics and Information Management from the University of Lisbon, Portugal.
