Ongoing projects
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), one of the largest specialized agencies in the UN system, leads global efforts to achieve a world free of hunger. As the lead agency for agriculture, forestry, fisheries, and rural development, FAO supports countries in advancing sustainable, resilient, and inclusive agrifood systems.
In Armenia, all FAO initiatives are coordinated through the FAO Representation Office. Current projects include:
Unlocking Sustainable Finance for Nutrition-Sensitive, Climate-Smart Food Systems Transformation in Armenia
Objective: Drive a systemic transformation of Armenia’s food system through four interconnected pathways - seed systems, sustainable dairy value chains, agri-SME finance, and consumer behavior. These pathways address key national challenges such as ecosystem degradation, import dependency, fragmented policies, and unhealthy diets, and serve as critical levers for fostering nature-positive, climate-resilient, and inclusive growth.
Local Empowerment of Actors for Development (LEAD)
Objective: Strengthen local development in Lori and Tavush by mobilizing and capacitating community actors to design needs-driven strategies; investing in infrastructure that enables local initiatives; and enhancing the capacities of national institutions to adapt and sustain the LEADER approach across Armenia.
Forest Resilience of Armenia: Enhancing Adaptation and Rural Green Growth via Mitigation
Objective: Increase national forest cover and carbon sequestration through investments in forestry, agroforestry, and capacity development. The project reduces fuelwood demand, supports reforestation and afforestation, and promotes sustainable, climate-adaptive forest management.
