إن الزراعة موجودة منذ أكثر من 000 10سنة تقريبًا. وفي ذلك الوقت، لم توفّر لنا الغذاء والمسكن وسبل العيش فحسب، إنما أيضا" المعرفة، والتقاليد والابتكارات وخدمات النظام الإيكولوجي. لكن فيما تُجهد العديد من النظم الإيكولوجية بما يفوق قدرتها، بات على الزراعة أن توفّر كل هذه المنافع - وأكثر بعد- وأن تكون في الوقت ذاته أكثر مراعاةً للبيئة.

شهد السيد Dandakoye، وهو في الثانية والخمسين من العمر ومتزوج ولديه سبعة أطفال، تغييرات مدمرة طرأت على الأراضي المحيطة بقريته ساكي كوارا تيغي. وهي تقع في الإقليم الغربي من النيجر وتحتضنها مستجمعات المياه في هضبة غورو تايا الواقعة في بلدة كولو الحضرية.

يشكّل التنوع البيولوجي عنصرًا أساسيًا في نظمنا الإيكولوجية العالمية ويوفر أساسًا تقوم عليه الممارسات الزراعية وإنتاج الأغذية. فهو لا غنى عنه بالنسبة إلى رفاهنا وأمننا الغذائي، لكنه غالبًا ما يكون عرضة للخطر بسبب ما نقوم به من أنشطة. بيد أنّ المزارعين تعلّموا في بعض المناطق العمل في تناغم مع البيئة واستخدام المعارف المتوارثة أبًا عن جدٍ على مدى قرون من الزمن من أجل تطبيق ممارسات مستدامة وحماية التنوع البيولوجي في النظم الإيكولوجية المحيطة بهم. وقد قام هؤلاء المزارعون والمجتمعات الريفية بابتكار طرق بارعة ووضعها موضع التنفيذ لصون التنوع البيولوجي والحفاظ عليه واستخدامه على نحو مستدام بالتوازي مع حماية سبل عيشهم والمناظر الطبيعية الفريدة التي يعيشون بين أحضانها.

يقول السيّد مراد، وهو صيّاد من جزر قرقنة التونسية، معربًا عن أسفه "إنّها تأكل كل شيء ولا تدع لنا شيئًا وتتكاثر بسرعة". وبالنسبة إلى الصيادين في هذا البلد، كان السرطان الذي يخرج من الماء ويعلق في شباكهم يمثّل كارثة.

يصطادRomeo Mikičić  في المياه الزرقاء للبحر الأدرياتيكي منذ ما يزيد عن 40 عامًا. ولدى هذا الأب لطفلين شغف بالبحر، كما أنه ينحدر من أجيال من الصيادين الذين عاشوا في جزيرة كريس، وهي واحدة من بين أكثر من ألف جزيرة تعتمد على الصيد في جمهورية كرواتيا.

FAO is currently seeking applications from experts to join the Scientific Advisory Group (SAG) of its Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) Programme for the 2024-2025 term. The Scientific Advisory Group, composed of nine members nominated by the FAO's Director-General, serves as a crucial expert body. Members are selected based on their individual merits rather than as representatives of member countries, with a focus on ensuring a balance in terms of region and gender.

FAO has launched a new phase of work – supported with $2 million from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) – to assist developing countries in monitoring and reporting data on both the state and changes in their forest cover more effectively and transparently. The Adaptation, Biodiversity and Carbon Mapping Tool (ABC-Map) is an open-source satellite imagery app, based on Google Earth Engine, with information from global datasets including the World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA), land cover data sets from the European Space Agency and climate data from the ERA5 dataset.
