International Symposium: Agriculture, biodiversity and food security - from commitments to actions

Transforming agrifood systems to implement the Biodiversity Plan

03/05/2024

The International Symposium Agriculture, Biodiversity and Food Security: From Commitments to Actions was held at the Quebec City Convention Centre, Canada, from April 30 to May 2, 2024.

Jointly organized by Université Laval's École supérieure d'études internationales, the Ministère des Relations internationales et de la Francophonie (MRIF), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, the event brought together over 250 key players from the agricultural and agrifood sectors in 39 countries.

Discussions focused on the importance of agriculture in the protection and sustainable management of biodiversity, while encouraging collective commitment to the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, or Biodiversity Plan, and the transformation of agrifood systems.

At the end of the symposium, the symposium co-chairs presented a roadmap of technical recommendations to help players in agrifood systems implement the Global Framework through concrete actions. These actions aim to put food producers at the heart of solutions for biodiversity and climate, whether in decision-making, co-development of technologies, or the setting up of indicators.
