Agrifood systems have the potential to make a significant contribution to the 2030 Agenda and more specifically to the conservation, sustainable use and restoration of biodiversity as stipulated in the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

On 16 January 2023, Madagascar’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MINAE), in partnership with its Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development (MEDD), signed an agreement with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), to catalyze the development of integrated policies to address the drivers of biodiversity loss and to ensure the sustainable use of biodiversity for food and agriculture.

In Lao People’s Democratic Republic, FAO continues to support the strengthening of the Agriculture and Rural Development Sector. ‘Biodiversity mainstreaming across agricultural sectors’ was one of three project agreements signed last week by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) and FAO on 24 January.

FAO, through the Flexible Voluntary Contribution (FVC) sub-programme, supports three countries (Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Madagascar and Uganda) to enhance biodiversity mainstreaming in policies and practices across the agricultural sectors at national and regional level. Each country will explore the potential to mainstream biodiversity by taking into account national and regional priorities, needs, regulations and policies and country programming frameworks.
