CCP Intersessional event
"Better Information for Better Policies"
Introduction
Informed, evidence-based policymaking relies on timely, transparent, and reliable market information – especially in today’s world of increasing volatility, uncertainty, and overlapping global crises, from climate extremes to conflicts and geopolitical tensions. High-quality market data is essential to enhancing the stability of agricultural markets, promoting food security, and supporting sustainable agrifood systems. By improving transparency, market information reduces uncertainty, helps prevent reactive or misinformed policy decisions, and builds trust among market actors and decision-makers.
For decades, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has played a global leading role in advancing market transparency. Through robust analytical work, global monitoring platforms, and its leadership within multilateral fora, FAO continues to support governments and stakeholders in navigating complex market dynamics.
As part of FAO’s 80th anniversary celebrations, this event will underscore the vital role of market information in shaping sound policies and sustainable agrifood systems. It will also highlight the work carried out under the FAO Committee on Commodity Problems (CCP) and the G20 Agricultural Market Information System (AMIS) – a flagship example of international cooperation aimed at improving market transparency and promoting coordination of policy responses in times of increased uncertainty.
This event will reflect on the achievements of the CCP and AMIS and examine their evolving roles in a rapidly changing global landscape.
Background
As FAO’s oldest technical committee, the CCP has played a central role in advancing market transparency for agrifood commodities. For decades, the CCP has served as a key platform for intergovernmental dialogue and policy coordination on global commodity markets and trade. Its work has consistently emphasized the importance of improved data collection, analysis, and dissemination to promote the stability and predictability of agrifood markets. By shaping FAO’s normative and analytical agenda on commodity issues, the CCP continues to be at the forefront of efforts to enhance the quality, accessibility, and policy relevance of market information.
A flagship initiative born following the global food price crisis in 2007-2010 is AMIS, launched in 2011 by G20 Agriculture Ministers. Hosted in FAO, AMIS is a collaborative global effort to strengthen market transparency and improve policy coordination in response to food price volatility. It brings together the world’s major producers, exporters, and importers of key staple crops – wheat, maize, rice and soybeans – to provide timely, reliable, and objective information on global market conditions. Supported by a unique inter-agency secretariat of 10 international organizations, AMIS delivers comprehensive market data, outlooks, and policy analysis that inform national and international decision-making. By fostering trust and collaboration among policymakers, market analysts, and international institutions, AMIS contributes to greater food security and resilience in the face of ongoing and emerging challenges
Objectives
This event, held as part of FAO’s 80th anniversary celebrations, aims to reflect on the legacy and continued relevance of FAO’s work on market transparency under the CCP and highlight the role and achievements of AMIS as a global public good that provides critical market intelligence. Against the backdrop of growing uncertainty in global food and agricultural markets, the event will explore how enhanced information-sharing can help address emerging challenges, support more effective policy responses, and foster renewed commitment to market transparency and evidence-based policymaking.
Discussions will center on FAO’s contributions to market transparency and evidence-based policy making under the CCP and on the effectiveness of AMIS in delivering timely, reliable data while fostering international cooperation. The event will also explore opportunities to strengthen collaboration among international organizations, governments, and market actors to improve data quality, timeliness and accessibility – ultimately supporting more effective and better policies.
