The State of the World’s Forest Genetic Resources
The State of the World’s Forest Genetic Resources, published in 2014, recognizes that forest genetic resources make an important contribution to sustainable development through the provision of timber, food, fuel and various environmental services. The report assesses the status and trends of forest genetic resources at global level, based on country reports and regional syntheses. The preparation of the report assisted in the identification of the priorities for the Global Plan of Action for the Conservation, Sustainable Use and Development of Forest Genetic Resources.
The Second Report on the State of the World’s Forest Genetic Resources, published in 2025 draws on data and information from 77 countries representing more than three-quarters of the world’s forests. It highlights the crucial role of these resources in sustainable development and examines progress in the implementation of the Global Plan of Action for the Conservation, Sustainable Use and Development of Forest Genetic Resources. The report reviews scientific advances and concludes with recommendations on action at the national, regional and global levels to ensure that forest genetic resources are sustainably managed for the benefit of current and future generations. It provided the basis for the revision of the Global Plan of Action for the Conservation, Sustainable Use and Development of Forest Genetic Resources.
