2024 was marked by significant progress and achievements as FAO has continued to drive digitalization and enhance digital capabilities for programme delivery and beyond. In 2024, FAO emphasized the importance of fostering a strong digital mindset and improving the use of the FAO Digital Workplace—paving the way for a more modern, efficient, and effective Organization.

FAO Food Loss App (FLAPP) has been selected as one of the top 20 projects competing for the prestigious WSIS Prizes 2025 under Action Line C7. This recognition highlights FAO and FLAPP's innovative approach to reducing food losses and promoting sustainability in agriculture.

FAOLEX has now been added to the DPG Registry, bringing our total number of certified FAO DPGs to eight.

The WSIS+20 Forum High-Level Event is scheduled to be held from 27 to 31 May 2024. FAO is organizing a session on Thursday 30th May 2024, 11:00-11:45 CEST on ‘The Future of Digital Agriculture: Process for Progress- Reflecting and Building on WSIS 20 years’ journey’.

The Agricultural Stress Index System (ASIS) has been recently added to the DPG Registry. ASIS is an innovative tool developed by FAO to monitor agricultural drought across the globe. Updating its data every 10 days, ASIS utilizes satellite technology to pinpoint regions at high risk of water stress and drought.

Over the last years, FAO has been developing and implementing digital inclusion initiatives, scaling up innovative digital technologies for development and targeted interventions worldwide. The FAO Digital Services Portfolio (DSP) and the FAO Hand-in-Hand (HIH) Geospatial Platform (GP) are at the forefront of this effort.

The Digital Public Good Alliance (DPGA)'s State of the Digital Public Goods Ecosystem Report 2023 showcases the power of  Digital Public Goods (DPGs) in shaping a better future.

Showcasing two of its flagship initiatives in the area of digital transformation, FAO will host two interactive Innovation Talks at the FAO Science and Innovation Forum 2023 (SIF 2023).

FAO's new Agroinformatics Platform (AP) aims to showcase through its expansion all the new possibilities and horizons that are opening now to enable more targeted interventions on the ground. 

On International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, the spotlight shines on the launch of the FAO Food Loss App (FLAPP), a groundbreaking initiative in the global battle against food loss and waste. 

FAO's special event at SIF2023 ‘AI and Digital Tools for Climate Resilient AgriFood Systems’ will take place on Thursday 19th October, 14.30-16.00 CEST to showcase concrete examples of technological innovations that aim at transforming traditional agricultural practices into sophisticated, data-driven systems that will protect efficiently our people and our planet. 

Building on the DSP model and ESA’s experience in designing and evaluate policy instruments, with the valuable support of the national Country Office, FAO has developed a comprehensive e-extension platform called “Smart Extension and Efficient Decision-making (S.E.E.D) Hub”

To answer the challenges that dairy and meat business in Central Asia has to tackle today, the EBRD and FAO have joined forces to offer new digital solutions to build resilience and contribute to more efficient, resilient and inclusive agrifood systems. The Agrokomek app has just been launched in Kazhakstan.
