Status of digital agriculture in 47 sub-Saharan African countries

Sub-Saharan Africa is uniquely positioned significantly increase its current agricultural productivity to lift the region’s more than 400 million people out of extreme poverty and improve the livelihood of approximately 250 million smallholder farmers and pastoralists in the region. To achieve that, substantive digital transformation of the agriculture sector is required through improved infrastructure and increased access to and use of digital technologies for agriculture.

It aims to raise awareness about existing AI applications in agriculture and to inspire stakeholders to develop and replicate the new ones.

The report is a summary of the main points addressed and conclusions formulated during the annual Digital Agriculture Forum (DAF) 2020 which was co-organized by FAO and Zhejiang University on 5-6 December 2020. The Forum aims to foster an enabling ecosystem to accelerate the digital transformation of agrifood systems through leveraging on innovative business models and digital solutions, and enhancing knowledge exchanges in digital agriculture policies and practices with multi-stakeholders from around the world.

Bees provide a critical link in the maintenance of ecosystems, pollination. They play a major role in maintaining biodiversity, ensuring the survival of many plants, enhancing forest regeneration, providing sustainability and adaptation to climate change and improving the quality and quantity of agricultural production systems. In fact, close to 75 percent of the world’s crops that produce fruits and seeds for human consumption depend, at least in part, on pollinators for sustained production, yield and quality.

Digital Agriculture Profile Argentina

Digital technologies are slowly spreading in agriculture sectors globally. But their adoption is hampered by the digital divide which requires significant public investments, improved policy and incentive frameworks to be bridged. Only after that, digital transformation will take place at scale. DAP is meant to assess the country's readiness for this digital transformation by identifying main bottlenecks, opportunities and risks for digital transformation. DAP will thus guide public investment and policy work to accelerate the scaling up of digital transformation.
