Question 3 (opens 26 September)

One of the major difficulties is the national coverage by radio, telephone. Not all rural areas have access to the communication tools. This disables producers in the adoption of new production technologies and in having timely access to the growing markets for better marketing of their products.

Thank you all for your contributions. We already can read about some of the barriers family farmers face under this question, but also under the previous questions. Have you encountered barriers when you wanted to work with community media and ICT tools for family farmers? If so - let us know which ones - and also... were you able to overcome the barrier(s) and how? Looking forward to read more about this topic.

Question 1 (opens 22 September)

Submitted by Alice Van der Elstraeten on Thu, 10/02/2014 - 10:00

Merci Patrice pour votre contribution. Je fais un petit résumé en anglais pour ceux qui ne maitrisent pas le français.

Below - Patrice's message in English.

Information on the price of  products early in the season season  is provided through print media, television and national radio. Community radio stations  relay the information to the producers in the local language.

The local radio stations provide information on training sessions, how much to produce and all information concerning rural development.

We propose that local radio can be used by extension sercvices to share messages on production techniques, post-harvest operations and how to look for funding and commercialization.

Thank you for all your contributions so far. It would be nice to read about some experiences about the role of community media in supporting family farmers' activities alongside the "newer" technologies! And maybe we will also find out how the community media themselves benefit from ICTs...

Question 4 (opens 30 September)

Submitted by Alice Van der Elstraeten on Tue, 09/30/2014 - 10:14

Welcome again to everybody and thank you for all your replies to the first three questions. Today we are opening a new question: What can be done at policy level to promote the use of community media and ICTs, and improve rural communication services?

Share your ideas with the community!

Question 2 (opens 24 September)

Submitted by Alice Van der Elstraeten on Wed, 09/24/2014 - 16:05

Thank you for your participation. Would it be possible to share a bit more information on your project? How does the tool work? Who supplies the information on the best practices? Are farmers themselves involved in the content development? It would be interesting to learn more about it. You can also share some links with us so we can look up more information. Thanks again.
