FAO emergencies and resilience

Democratic Republic of the Congo

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has one of the world’s highest number of people in high acute food insecurity. Of these, about 80 percent live in rural areas and rely on agriculture to feed and provide for themselves. For decades, the country has been facing a complex humanitarian crisis, fueled by armed conflict, natural disasters and disease outbreaks. Compounding the situation are economic challenges linked to the depreciation of the local currency and high food prices, and structural weaknesses such as extreme poverty. Agricultural assistance can help vulnerable households produce their own food and generate income.
