Traditional products from Mangalița and Bazna meat, old local swine breeds

The two pig breeds, Mangalița and Bazna, have been ignored for a long time because of their low prolificacy and low carcass yield. However, there are rearers who appreciate them and fight to bring them back to the public’s attention. One of them is the agronomist Ioan Tătăran, from the commune of Recea, village of Lăpușel, Maramureș County, the president of the Association of Traditional and Ecological Products Producers of Maramureș and the vice-president of the National Federation of Traditional Products Producers. Mr Tătăran is also the vice-president of the National Association of Swine Rearers of the Mangalița and Bazna Breeds. “I like these breeds very much because I have known them since I was a child. When I was young, in my village and in other ones, in the whole country, even, they raised 70% Mangalița and Bazna pigs,” remembers Ioan Tătăran.
