Improving emergency response to food safety events of international concern

For the fifth year, WHO Country Office in Jordan, Climate Change, Health and Environment Unit / EMRO and the International Food Safety Authorities secretariat /HQ, celebrated with the Jordan Ministry of Health and the Jordan Food and Drug Administration World Food Safety Day 2023.

This year'stheme “Food standards save lives”, holds a call for action for policymakers, food businesses and workplaces, educational institutions, and most importantly consumers. Drawing attention to the role of food safety standards in protecting consumers health, food security, economies and livelihood. 

The event included face-to-face training on improving emergency response to food safety events of international concern to more than 33 food safety inspectors and public health specialists who worked together to solve a fictional food safety emergency event that resulted in a Listeria monocytogenes foodborne outbreak linked to foods internationally distributed.

The training aimed at building national capacities to respond to food safety emergencies and supporting Jordan in setting a road map for upgrading the emergency preparedness and response component of the national food safety system, implementing the global strategy for food safety 2022-2030, enhancing cooperation and partnership with the INFOSAN and exchanging information in a timely manner to guide effective risk management measures based on scientific foundations.
