International Day of Forests 2026: Forests and Economies

Forests mean business

Forests are essential to the livelihoods of over 1.6 billion people, including more than 2,000 indigenous cultures. They provide food, fuel, shelter, medicines and income for rural communities worldwide.

FAO's Forest and Livelihoods team works to strengthen the contribution of forests and trees to sustainable livelihoods, food security and environmental sustainability.

FAO supports countries in developing policies and practices that enhance the benefits forests provide to people while ensuring sustainable forest management.
