Enhancing Ghana’s forest monitoring system for climate action through AIM4Forests
01/04/2025
Ghana’s commitment to sustainable forest management and climate action has been further strengthened through the assessment of needs and gaps. The application of the national forest monitoring system (NFMS) assessment tool has been instrumental in this process.
Enhancing sustainable forest management and climate action through the national forest monitoring system in Kenya
21/03/2025
Kenya’s National Forest Monitoring System (NFMS) supports sustainable forest management and climate action by providing accurate data to guide decisions and track progress. This case study highlights how the NFMS enhances collaboration among stakeholders and promotes innovative solutions for forest conservation. With its comprehensive approach, the NFMS is helping Kenya address deforestation and contribute to global climate goals.
Strengthening forest data transparency with a national monitoring system in Lao People’s Democratic Republic
21/03/2025
This publication highlights Lao People’s Democratic Republic’s National Forest Monitoring System (NFMS), which supports REDD+, results-based payments, and sustainable forest management. It enables transparent reporting on forest changes and carbon stocks, with improvements in tracking degradation, fire monitoring, and data sharing, supported by FAO and partners.
Slowly getting there: a review of country experience on estimating emissions and removals from forest degradation
26/11/2024
Estimating emissions and removals from forest degradation is important, yet challenging, for many countries. This paper reports results from analysis of country reporting (to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and also to several climate finance initiatives) and key take-aways from a south-south exchange workshop among 17 countries with forest mitigation programmes.
Forest monitoring for transparent commodity supply chains
19/11/2024
Over the last two decades, consumers have grown more aware of the environmental and social impacts of commodity production. Many companies have started to address those concerns by adopting codes of conduct or making public commitments to improve their business and sourcing practices.
Pathways to forest data transparency: Best practices from national forest monitoring to support climate action
10/11/2024
Featuring successful examples from Africa, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America and the Caribbean, this publication empowers countries to develop robust national forest monitoring systems that drive climate reporting and inform effective policy. This resource equips policymakers, researchers, and forest managers with actionable strategies to enhance NFMSs, support sustainable development, and promote effective climate solutions.
Options for addressing the risk of non-permanence for land-based mitigation in carbon crediting programmes
05/11/2024
To mitigate climate change, global efforts must focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and removing atmospheric CO2. Carbon crediting programmes offer incentives by issuing tradable credits for each tonne of CO2 equivalent reduced or removed. However, these credits often face a challenge called "non-permanence" or reversal risk, where carbon stored in reservoirs like forests and soils may be rereleased due to natural or human-induced events.
Grounded in data – Informing climate action and reporting with national forest inventories
08/10/2024
The publication, Grounded in Data – Informing Climate Action and Reporting with National Forest Inventories, provides a comprehensive overview of the role of National Forest Inventories (NFIs) in supporting sustainable forest management and informing international climate commitments. It explores how NFIs, as systematic and cyclical processes, compile and analyze data on forest resources, providing valuable insights into forest health, biodiversity, carbon stocks, and socioeconomic functions.
