Webinar: Climate change, peace and food security. A holistic approach for a sustainable future

Disruptive weather patterns and climate change have a direct bearing on global food security, so a better understanding of such complex systems is crucial to fighting hunger and poverty.

During the virtual event "Climate change, peace and food security. A holistic approach for a sustainable future", the 2021 Nobel Laureate in Physics, Giorgio Parisi, will be invited to join the FAO Nobel Laureates Alliance for Food Security and Peace and will deliver a lecture entitled: "Science: the headlight on our future".

Parisi was awarded the Nobel prize for "the discovery of the interplay of disorder and fluctuations in physical systems from atomic to planetary scales".

The event will be opened by the Director-General, with interventions from Luigi Di Maio, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy, and Muhammad Yunus, 2006 Nobel Peace Laureate.

The webinar will take place on Wednesday 19 January, 11:00 - 13:00 CET.

Webinar: The role of evaluation for climate action

Building on the outcomes of the recent UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26), this webinar aims to facilitate a dialogue on the role that evaluation can play for learning and bringing solutions towards the goals of the Paris Agreement.

Bringing together evaluators and development practitioners, the webinar will offer a platform to exchange on the shifts that evaluation practices must undertake to help tackle the climate crisis, while also shedding light on initiatives that trigger transformation at all levels of society, with a focus on development cooperation and humanitarian assistance in agriculture and food security.

Following a key note presentation, participants will be invited to join and discuss in parallel sessions where a short presentation will be followed by facilitated discussions. The expected outcome is a collective reflection on the actions and ways forward for advancing the role of evaluation in support to learning and transformation for climate change action.

The webinar will take place on Thursday, December 9, 2021 and starts at 2:00 PM (Rome time).

WEBINAR - How can we produce food and take action for climate and nature?

Nature-based Solutions (NbS) in agriculture are a critical solution for positive change. Farmers, ranchers, and food producers are on the frontlines of climate change and play an important role in developing and implementing solutions. Climate and biodiversity actors are increasingly seeing agriculture as a central solution set and they are engaging the agricultural community to solve our collective challenges. When deployed properly, NbS can provide a triple benefit: improving the productivity and resilience of agriculture, mitigating and adapting to climate change, and enhancing nature and biodiversity.

FAO and The Nature Conservancy collaborated to explore the potential of NbS in the much-needed transformation of our food systems. This collaboration has generated three reports addressing NbS in agricultural production systems: 1) a literature review on the state of the science; 2) a policy brief on the case and pathways for adoption, and 3) a finance guide for identifying and creating investable projects. A jointly organized webinar will address the question of how NbS in agriculture can help address climate change and conserve land, water and biodiversity.

The webinar will take place on 11 February at 10:00 AM EST.

WEBINAR - Open and Transparent Forest Data: Innovation and Technology for Climate Action

A key pillar of the Paris Agreement is the Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF), which aims to raise ambitions for climate action through transparent country reporting. The development of National Forest Monitoring Systems with open and transparent data can enable action for forest and climate. In light of the climate emergency, it is time to scale up efforts toward accurate, open and transparent forest data, to catalyze higher ambitions under the Paris Agreement.

The FAO webinar “Open and Transparent Forest data: Innovation and Technology for Climate Action” will highlight global and national efforts in the field of forest monitoring that support the implementation of the ETF under the Paris Agreement.

Specifically, the webinar aims to:

  • present the “Building global capacity to increase transparency in the forest sector" (CBIT-Forest)” project and its contribution to the ETF under the Paris Agreement;
  • present latest digital data sources and related dissemination innovations contributing to the Paris Agreement by promoting transparency and open data, and
  • share experience from Bangladesh on data management and transparency.

The webinar will take place on Wednesday 11 November 2020, 14:30 – 16:00 CEST.
