GFRAS - AEAS

What role can agricultural extension and advisory services play in realizing gender equality and improved nutrition?

This discussion invites you to reflect on the role that agricultural extension and advisory services (AEAS) can play in contributing to reducing gender inequities and improving nutrition. FAO/INFOODS Global Database for Pulses on Dry Mater Basis

The FAO/INFOODS Global Database for Pulses on Dry Mater Basis (PulsesDM1.0) has been published on the INFOODS website http://www.fao.org/infoods/infoods/tables-and-databases/faoinfoods-databases/en/

The FAO/INFOODS Global Database for Pulses on Dry Mater Basis (PulsesDM1.0) provides nutrient values for pulses on a DRY MATTER BASIS – it is intended mainly for standard setting purposes. Pulses are a subgroup of legumes that includes dry edible seeds with low fat content. The data were recalculated to dry matter basis from the average nutrient values for 16 species published in the FAO/INFOODS Global Food Composition Database for Pulses (uPulses). In uPulses, data derived mainly from chemical analysis, were complemented by data from other published sources and compiled following standards and guidelines outlined by FAO/INFOODS. PulsesDM cover proximates, minerals, vitamins, phytate, amino acids and fatty acids fractions for foods in raw and processed forms on.

Toolkit and E-learning modules on nutrition-sensitive agriculture and food systems

FAO has just released the Toolkit and E-learning modules on Nutrition Sensitive Agriculture and Food Systems. This integrated package of guidance materials, developed by drawing upon expertise from across the Organisation and of many partners, aims at enhancing capacities for the formulation, implementation and monitoring of nutrition-sensitive food system policies and programmes, in line with the Rome Declaration on Nutrition, the SDGs and UN Decade of Action for Nutrition.

The “Toolkit for Nutrition Sensitive Agriculture and Food Systems” is composed by four tools:

  • Key recommendations for improving nutrition through agriculture and food systems
  • Designing nutrition-sensitive agriculture investments. Checklist and guidance for programme formulation
  • Nutrition-sensitive agriculture and food systems in practice. Options for intervention
  • Compendium of indicators for nutrition-sensitive agriculture.

The E-learning modules on Nutrition Sensitive Agriculture and Food Systems use a scenario-based and experiential learning approach to assist policy makers and programme managers to effectively integrate nutrition in their work.

Two modules are already available on-line:

  • Nutrition, Food Security and Livelihoods: Basic concepts
  • Improving Nutrition through Agriculture and Food Systems

These resources are freely available and downloadable at

Online discussion on "Agroecology and Nutrition"

TECA (Technologies and practices for small agricultural producers), FAO’s free web based online information and communication platform for smallholders, has launched an online discussion on "Agroecology and Nutrition". The objective of this discussion is to identify successful agroecological farming practices which contribute to nutritious food systems.

Many successful experiences have already been documented on various platforms of FAO, e.g. TECA (during the previous discussions on “Sustainable agriculture through Agroecology” and “Agroecology and Soil Health”) and on Agroecology Knowledge hub. Based on these and other experiences, a three-week discussion will be held, inviting you to share your knowledge and experiences on agroecology and successful agroecological farming practices and approaches.

The discussion page can be accessed through the following link: http://teca.fao.org/discussion/agroecology-and-nutrition

The discussion will be available from 20 March until 12 April 2017.

Webinar: Fostering Learning and Innovation in Nutrition

The SUN Civil Society Network invites you to participate in the Learning Route follow up webinar:

Fostering Learning and Innovation in Nutrition

Date: 31st January 2017

Time: 10:15 - 12:00 (GMT)

Language: English (translation in Frengh and Spanish will be available for the Q&A sessions)

At the end of October the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Civil Society Network, in collaboration with SUN Alliance Rwanda and PROCASUR Corporation, launched the first international Learning Route exchange programme in Rwanda. This six day peer-to-peer learning exchange brought together alliances from 9 African countries to learn from innovations being used by stakeholders in Rwanda including civil society to scale up nutrition. The Learning Route focused on key areas of intervention including multi stakeholder coordination, communication for behavioural change, social mobilisation, value chains and decentralisation. As result of the LR exchange, each Alliance submitted an “Innovation Plan”.

Join the webinar to find out more about the learning and innovations developed by the Alliances.

Survey 'Review of Participatory Land Use/Resource Planning Tools and Approaches'

This survey is part of a process started by the Land and Water Division (AGL) of the FAO to review needs, required tools and processes at various scales, to help countries and stakeholders meet emerging challenges and competition over resources and support sustainable use of land and water resources and resilient ecosystems. The objectives of this survey are to:
  • Share experiences and lessons learned on participatory land use planning (PLUP) tools and approaches to improve their use in supporting Integrated Landscape Management (ILM)
  • Identify main gaps and opportunities of the current tools and methods, as a basis for the development of a demand-driven and state-of-the-art participatory land use/resources planning toolkit to support stakeholders at all levels of planning
The survey should take no more than 10-20 minutes and is available in all 6 UN langauges:
