Gender

FAO DG QU Dongyu's video message for the International Women's Day 2020

Realising women’s rights, achieving gender equality and accelerating women’s empowerment is inextricably linked to the strengthening of food systems in the fight against hunger and malnutrition, and improving the lives and livelihoods of rural populations. A major reason is that rural women are key actors in food production, reducing food losses, increasing agricultural productivity, enhancing dietary diversity and the marketing of produce along agri-food value chains.

Experience shows that when rural women have better access to resources, services and economic opportunities, the result is increased food security and improved nutrition and FAO’s work in gender equality and the empowerment of rural women and girls contributes to each of the 17 SDGs.
