Unlocking the potential of rural women in Ethiopia

Kebele is one of over 2 000 women who have benefited from the UN joint programme on “Accelerating Progress towards the Economic Empowerment of Rural Women” (JP RWEE) in Ethiopia. With the support she received through the programme, she has not only increased her income, but also improved her relationship with her husband.

The JP RWEE is a partnership of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD), the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), and UN Women. Launched in 2012, it is implemented in seven countries – Ethiopia, Guatemala, Kyrgyzstan, Liberia, Nepal, Niger and Rwanda – and works to enhance the productive potential of rural women by improving their access to and control over resources, services and opportunities, and enables them to have a voice in their households and communities. In addition, the programme works to create a policy environment that enables support for the economic empowerment of rural women.
