PyAEZ: a Python package for agro-ecological zoning
PyAEZ is an open-source Python package that implements the Agro-Ecological Zoning (AEZ) framework. It provides accessible and reproducible tools for assessing land suitability and productivity for agricultural uses. PyAEZ integrates climate, crop, soil and terrain information to simulate crop production conditions, estimate attainable yields and assess agro-ecological suitability. It can be used with global datasets or adapted to national and subnational data and assessment scenarios.
PyAEZ originated from efforts to make AEZ methodologies more accessible for national and subnational applications through an open and reproducible Python-based modelling environment.
PyAEZ has benefited from collaboration between FAO, the Asian Institute of Technology - Geo-informatics Center (AIT-GIC), the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), and Mississippi State University (MSU).
PyAEZ is relevant to national and international organizations working on agricultural production and sustainability, land and water resources, food security, agricultural development, climate variability and climate change. National and subnational applications can support land use planning and the assessment of alternative cropping options to improve the use of land resources.
The latest version of PyAEZ (version 3) is openly available with source code, documentation and supporting resources through the FAO PyAEZ GitHub repository.
