General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean - GFCM

Building a new vision

To define the 10-year strategy for Mediterranean and Black Sea fisheries and aquaculture, the GFCM conducted consultations with a wide array of stakeholders and partners to gather their input and priorities.

Background

Brainstorming on how to ensure the sustainability of fisheries and aquaculture in the region
On 3 November 2020, more than 20 ministers met under the umbrella of the GFCM to discuss pressing priorities, marking the first step of the participatory process to build together a new strategy for sustainable fisheries and aquaculture in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea.

Consultation with a wide array of stakeholders and partners
On the basis of the views expressed by the member countries, the GFCM prepared and submitted a zero draft of the strategy proposal. On 29 March 2021, the representatives of 22 countries and the European Union met with intergovernmental, non-governmental and civil society organizations to discuss this zero draft.

Adoption of key targets by the GFCM Heads of Delegations
Taking into account the outcomes of the consultation, on 14 April 2021, the GFCM Heads of Delegations adopted the targets and priorities of the new strategy. A consolidated version of the draft strategy integrating the inputs of the various stakeholders was then prepared.

Endorsement of the GFCM 2030 Strategy
A high-level event was held in July 2021 for Mediterranean and Black Sea countries to endorse the new strategy. Ahead of this meeting, high-level stakeholders from across the region met to review the implementation the RPOA-SSF, assessing new challenges and opportunities for the sector in the context of implementing the GFCM 2030 strategy.
