The "Sahel Report" was issued every month throughout the growing season, which lasts from June to October, by GIEWS. The report described weather conditions, pest infestations and crop prospects in this drought-prone zone. A synthesis report was published at the end of the season containing first harvest estimates, based on a series of Crop Assessment Missions which were undertaken jointly with national and regional authorities.
