The Adriatic Sea is a semi-enclosed basin in which coastal countries share most of the open sea resources and fishing areas.

Being the first to define and focus on shared stocks in the Mediterranean, AdriaMed has drawn the attention of the Adriatic countries to the importance of cooperative studies, multilateral and multi-stakeholder discussion and, ultimately, the joint management of fisheries and harmonized development of aquaculture.

The Programme supports partner countries with the implementation of the ecosystem approach to fisheries and aquaculture (EAFA).

To do so, AdriaMed facilitates all the steps toward fisheries and aquaculture management including the gathering and use of relevant scientific data and empirical information, fosters the involvement of stakeholders in discussion and management planning, and promotes the identification of possible options for decision making.

The Programme was instrumental in creating a unique framework in which fishers, farmers, managers and scientists from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Italy, Montenegro and Slovenia could meet and develop a common vision on fisheries and aquaculture management toward the adoption of multi-country management measures.
