Livestock and enteric methane

In support of the upcoming 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has released a new activity book designed to educate children and pre-teens on the role of livestock in human communities and their impact on the environment.

Livestock production plays a vital role in poverty reduction and food security, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, by providing essential products like meat, milk, and eggs, and supporting millions of livelihoods. However, the sector's growth to meet increasing demand contributes to higher greenhouse gas emissions, particularly methane from ruminants like cattle, sheep, and goats, which poses an environmental challenge.
