The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in collaboration with the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development and the Ministry of Environment, Climate and Wildlife, successfully convened the inception meeting of the project “Enhance national livestock and climate policies with short‑lived climate pollutants mitigation in the extensive beef sector in Zimbabwe.”

Zimbabwe is advancing efforts to reduce methane emissions from livestock through a new FAO project focused on climate‑friendly feed management, improved data systems and stronger policy integration in the extensive beef sector. 

FAO and Senegal collaborate to strengthen national capacity in activity data collection, greenhouse gas emissions assessment and reporting from the livestock sector.

FAO convened the first technical consultation meeting on compliant and voluntary carbon markets in the livestock sector in Johannesburg, South Africa, from 28 to 30 October 2025.

Livestock forms a vital part of the agricultural landscape in the Lao People's Democratic Republic (PDR), accounting for over a third of agriculture's value added. Smallholder farmers raise cattle, buffalo, pigs, and poultry with minimal inputs. The demand for livestock products has surged due to rising domestic consumption and cross-border trade. To meet this growing demand, the government’s Agricultural Development Strategy 2025 targets a 2.5 percent annual growth rate of animal population to enhance the production of animals for exports and animal products for food security.

The rise in nitrogen fertilizers over the past century has significantly contributed to enhancing agricultural production and bolstering food security and nutrition for an expanding global population. Nevertheless, improper use of nitrogen can severely damage air, water, and soil quality, result in biodiversity loss, and exacerbate climate change.

A new analysis from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) finds that almost all countries identify agrifood systems as a priority for climate change adaptation (94 percent) and mitigation (91 percent) in their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). This highlights the tremendous potential of agrifood systems as climate solutions, especially as countries prepare to submit their third round of NDCs in 2025.
