Smart Aquaculture Biosecurity (SAB)

The Smart Aquaculture Biosecurity (SAB) project seeks to strengthen the sustainability and resilience of shrimp farming in participating countries. Shrimp aquaculture faces challenges such as vulnerability to biosecurity threats, environmental changes, market volatility, and other external shocks. As a key sector for livelihoods and exports, shrimp farming depends on robust management practices and effective risk mitigation to remain competitive.

The SAB project focuses on improving the shrimp value chain by integrating digital tools for monitoring, automation, and predictive analysis. It aims to enhance governance, production efficiency, and biosecurity preparedness, ensuring more resilient and sustainable shrimp farming systems in selected countries:

This Shrimp Infectious Myonecrosis strategy manual provides key guidance for national policymakers in developing contingency plans for managing IMN outbreaks, a viral disease affecting farmed Pacific whiteleg shrimp. First reported in Brazil (2002), it has since spread to Indonesia, India, and Malaysia. The manual supports countries, producers, and stakeholders in preparing for and responding to IMN.

Water quality sensors to strengthen shrimp health management and optimize production

The National Fisheries and Aquaculture Health and Safety Authority (Sanipes), an agency attached to the Ministry of Production (Produce), together with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), launched in Tumbes the water quality sensors of the project ‘Smart and Sustainable Aquaculture through Effective Biosecurity and Digital Technology’. The initiative aims to strengthen health management and good practices in the farming of white shrimp, ensuring sustainable production while reducing biosecurity impacts and risks.

Training Course on Shrimp Disease Surveillance and Biosecurity

The training course ‘Shrimp Disease Surveillance and Biosecurity’ provided key tools for the prevention and control of aquaculture diseases, emphasizing good biosecurity practices and health monitoring. Organized by FAO Peru and SANIPES under the SAB Project, it included sample fixation for histopathology and fresh analyses for disease detection, strengthening capacities in the shrimp sector for sustainable and smart production.”
