The SAGA project is supporting the Government of Haiti in the development and implementation of the adaptation component of its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) for the agricultural sectors. The project's activities focus on strengthening the resilience of agricultural sectors in a context of climate change while ensuring food security and nutrition. SAGA is centered around a strong partnership between the Ministry of agriculture, natural resources and rural development (MARNDR), the Ministry of environment (MED), research/academic institutions, and the civil society, especially women and youth of rural communities.
Policy support activities
- Developing guidance documents to support the development of the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) and the national Integrated Water Resources Management Action Plan (PAGIRE), as well as the revision of the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) for the agricultural sectors.
- Strengthening the adaptation planning capacities of government officials through trainings and multi-stakeholder workshops.
- Facilitating policy dialogue and climate change coordination mechanisms at the local, national and international levels.
Community-based pilot initiatives
- Disseminating resilient production systems through a Farmer Field School (FFS) approach adapted to climate change.
- Rehabilitating and consolidating agroforestry systems at Camp Perrin and capacity building on sustainable techniques for market gardening, orchard management and packaging of vegetables and fruits.
Implementing partner: SUCO. - Strengthening the capacities of women entrepreneurs and autonomous FFS of Hinche and Maissade communes, in integrated water management, crop calendar, business management and marketing - resilient to climate change.

Research activities
- Optimizing the water use to reduce the vulnerability to climate change of the food production sector in the Artibonite River basin by: creating a climate and hydrological projections database (2020-2100 horizon); producing a hydro-economic model for the river; and assessing vulnerabilities of economic sectors of the basin.
Implementing partner: Laval University. - Developing a climate change adaptation planning guide for agricultural sectors in Haiti based on: a participatory assessment of adaptation measures adopted at the community level in rural Haiti; and the results of multi-stakeholder workshops bringing together state institutions, research and civil society organizations.
