As part of the Hand-in-Hand Initiative, whose goal is to help reach Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 1 and 2, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) partnered with the Government of Ethiopia to ensure that agricultural investments are inclusive of local populations and the poor, as well as environmentally sustainable.

This policy brief introduces a working paper conducted by FAO that sheds light on the household-level relationship between poverty and food insecurity in various countries of sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America. The paper finds a solid correlation between household poverty and food insecurity in all the examined countries, meaning that poor households are significantly more likely to be food insecure.

This study analyses national household surveys from ten countries in sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America to shed light on the household-level relationship between monetary poverty and food insecurity. Similar to previous studies, results highlight a clear correlation between poverty and food insecurity.

To achieve this goal, the Organization must reach the poor and the extremely poor in rural areas, analysing their needs and aspirations and providing effective guidance for the design of policies and investments that foster inclusive and sustainable development.

Today, about 736 million people live in extreme poverty. Extreme poverty is primarily a rural phenomenon, with 80 percent of the extreme poor living in rural areas, across greatly diverse rural landscapes. Despite great progress in poverty reduction, the standard of living of the poorest of the poor has remained almost unchanged in the past 35 years, signaling that a huge gap in policy making and programmatic approaches are leaving them behind.

Sustainable Development Goal 1, ending poverty in all its forms, everywhere, is the most ambitious goal set by the 2030 Agenda. This Goal includes eradicating extreme poverty in the next 12 years, which will require more focused actions in addition to broad-based interventions.
