This policy brief introduces a working paper conducted by FAO that sheds light on the household-level relationship between poverty and food insecurity in various countries of sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America. The paper finds a solid correlation between household poverty and food insecurity in all the examined countries, meaning that poor households are significantly more likely to be food insecure.

This study analyses national household surveys from ten countries in sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America to shed light on the household-level relationship between monetary poverty and food insecurity. Today, about 736 million people live in extreme poverty. Extreme poverty is primarily a rural phenomenon, with 80 percent of the extreme poor living in rural areas, across greatly diverse rural landscapes. Despite great progress in poverty reduction, the standard of living of the poorest of the poor has remained almost unchanged in the past 35 years, signaling that a huge gap in policy making and programmatic approaches are leaving them behind.
