Indigenous Peoples

Advocacy and Capacity Development

Raising awareness among the global public and key stakeholders is fundamental for responsible engagement with Indigenous Peoples. FAO regards advocacy as a key strategy to promote the rights and advance on the demands of Indigenous Peoples.

To continue strengthening FAO’s engagement with Indigenous Peoples worldwide, the Indigenous Peoples Unit takes part in relevant international events and discussions focused on tackling the challenges of food security at national, regional, and global levels. FAO supports the attendance of Indigenous Peoples' representatives to discuss the importance of their knowledge, sustainable livelihoods, and food system practices, among other aspects.

FAO Indigenous Peoples Unit organises events, seminars and forums (such as the UNGIYF) that draw attention to Indigenous Peoples' issues, and in which Indigenous Peoples can effectively participate and engage. Furthermore, FAO’s publications and communication materials seek to  highlight the game-changing nature of Indigenous Peoples’ food and knowledge systems.
