National seminar on the development of biosafety policies and guidelines in accordance with the Cartagena Protocol was held in the city of Naryn on 19 June. The seminar was organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in collaboration with the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (RECCA).

In alignment with the principles of the One Health approach, a specialized training course on the “Diagnosis of Viral Animal Diseases, including Sampling Strategies, Sample Reception and Registration, Test Selection and Interpretation, and Quality Assurance Aspects” was convened in Bishkek from 8 to 12 June.

On the eve of World Food Safety Day, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health of the Kyrgyz Republic and the I. Razzakov Kyrgyz State Technical University, organized a seminar entitled “Safe food for all.” 

In spring 2026, more than 400 000 forest and fruit tree seedlings were planted under the project across the pilot districts of Uzgen, Suzak, Ak-Talaa and Toguz-Toro. These community-based planting activities covered more than 500 hectares of land within both the State Forest Fund and municipal territories managed by local self-government bodies, known as aiyl okmotu.

On 29 May, a national workshop on the development of biosafety policies and guidelines was held in Talas under the FAO/GEF project “Implementation of the National Biosafety Framework of the Kyrgyz Republic in line with the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety.

About 60 participants, including government officials and national experts from four countries, development partners and representatives of international organizations, gathered in Bishkek on 25 May to turn the findings of mountain vulnerability assessments into practical next steps for climate adaptation and sustainable natural resource management. 

A five-day hands-on workshop, held from 11 to 15 May at the Centre for Veterinary Diagnostics and Expertise in Bishkek, was specifically designed to strengthen this capacity. 

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Kyrgyzstan, together with the Mountain Partnership Secretariat, presented the preliminary findings of a study assessing the environmental and socio economic situation in the At Bashy district of Naryn region.

From 27 to 30 April in Bishkek, the country’s capital, two interlinked events were held to strengthen the institutional and technical capacities of the Forest Service, the Veterinary Service for Animal Health, Livestock Development, Pastures and Fodder, and the Community Development and Investment Agency (ARIS).

Held on 24 April, the conference brought together representatives from territorial and sectoral structures of the veterinary service, veterinary associations, state bodies, development partners, civil society organizations, and the media.

In spring 2026, the planting of 150 600 seedlings began in Toguz-Toro district of Jalal-Abad Region in Kyrgyzstan, covering nearly 86 hectares. Of this area, 36 hectares are located on land managed by ayyl aimaks (rural municipalities), while 50 hectares are situated on State Forest Fund land.

On 15 April, the fifth meeting of the National Steering Committee of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) project “Carbon Sequestration through Climate Investment in Forests and Rangelands in the Kyrgyz Republic (CS-FOR)” took place in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan. 

From 13 to 16 April, a practical seminar for veterinarians on “Post-mortem examination, legal aspects, biosecurity, and a systematic approach to investigation” was held at the Department of Anatomy and Physiology of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Biotechnology of the Kyrgyz National Agrarian University named after K. I. Skryabin. 

On 17 April, a national workshop on the development of biosafety policies and guidance in line with the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety was held in Bishkek. The event brought together representatives from government agencies, the expert and scientific communities, and farmers to discuss next steps for strengthening the national biosafety mechanism.

From 20 March to 10 April, an agricultural census was conducted across all regions and districts of Kyrgyzstan. This is a landmark event for the country’s agricultural sector, as it will help provide an accurate picture of the state of agriculture nationwide.

The new premises will serve as permanent hubs for coordination, open dialogue and joint work, while also improving access to information and expert support for all residents of the region.

In 2026, a large-scale initiative for forest restoration and the development of fruit tree plantations will be implemented across approximately 500 hectares in the Jalal-Abad region. This initiative is carried out under the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) project “Carbon Sequestration through Climate Investment in Forests and Rangelands in the Kyrgyz Republic (CS-FOR).”

Biosafety requires the development and strengthening of appropriate policies and regulatory frameworks for food, agriculture, fisheries and forestry. In this context, a workshop on the development of biosafety policies and guidelines in line with the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety took place on 27 March in Osh.

The risks of land degradation, climate change and the vulnerability of rural areas are becoming increasingly significant. As experts point out, however, the sustainable management of land, pasture and forest resources is impossible without equitable land rights and gender equality.

An experimental project to restore degraded land using the innovative “Seed Balls” method has been launched in Batken Region, Kyrgyzstan.
