Twenty-sixth session of the Near East Forestry and Range Commission

The 26th session of the Near East Forestry and Range Commission will be held in conjunction with the third session of the COFO Working Group on Dryland Forests and Agrosilvopastoral Systems (from 11 to 13 September 2023). 

The event will also host the 5th Near East Forestry Week (from 10 to 14 September 2023) as well as the first Drylands Summer School (from 12 to 15 September 2023).

Background

The 26th session will debate on issues related to forest and rangeland resilience in a context of climate change, phytosanitary measures in forestry, socio-economic empowerment of forest-dependent people and silvopastoral and agrosilvopastoral communities, as well as enhancing South-South knowledge sharing for better dryland forests and agrosilvopastoral systems restoration.

In collaboration with the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, a high level opening ceremony for both sessions is expected on September 10, 2023.

Near East Forestry Week

The fifth edition of the Near East Forestry Week will be a regional gathering to discuss technical emerging topics of relevance to the forestry and rangelands in the Near East Region, and share and present country and regional innovative experiences on sustainable management of natural resources, valorisation of forest and pastoral products, as well as socio-economic empowerment of local and vulnerable communities in silvopastoral ecosystems.

The technical workshops are in line with the four regional priorities for the Near East and North African countries:  

  • Regional Priority 1: Rural transformation and inclusive value chains
  • Regional Priority 2: Food Security and healthy diets for all
  • Regional Priority 3: Greening agriculture, water scarcity and climate action
  • Regional Priority 4: Building resilience to multiple shocks 

The technical workshops are as follows: 

  • Restoration Initiatives in the Mediterranean Region: the Flagship program under the Decade on Ecosystem Restoration and other initiatives
  • The role of urban forests and trees in adaptation to global change in dryland cities
  • Challenges and opportunities for climate change adaptation with dryland forests
  • Enhancing South-South knowledge sharing for better dryland forests and agrosilvopastoral systems restoration in- the Near East region
  • Meeting of the Near East Network on Forest Health and Invasive Species 

National side events as well as exhibition activities are also planned.
