Towards climate-resilient agrifood systems in the Arab region

Webinar Series: FAO Regional Office for the Near East & North Africa, Arab Organization for Agricultural Development and the League of Arab States

The Arab region faces a cascade of risks to agricultural productivity and food security in the face of climate change. With global warming accelerating, changing temperature and precipitation regimes and the onset of climatic extreme events are expected to add considerable stress to land and water systems that underpin crop, livestock, aquaculture, fisheries and forest-based production.

In 2022, the Food and Agriculture Organization Regional Office for the Near East & North Africa (FAO-RNE) organized a PreCOP27 Workshop on Agriculture & Climate Change for the NENA region, bringing together representatives of Ministries of Agriculture and Environment in Cairo in a series of interactive and resource-rich discussions to take stock of salient issues and priorities in the region in the lead up to COP27 and COP28.

Following the outcomes of the workshop, FAO-RNE, together with the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development (AOAD) of the League of Arab States (LAS), is hosting a series of events and webinars to enhance knowledge and capacities on the impacts, tools, solutions and good practices for making agriculture more resilient in the region.

Objectives

The webinars bring together state-of-the-art expertise and knowledge on planning for and implementing adaptation and mitigation solutions in agrifood systems, with examples from the Arab region.

It aims to improve collaboration and knowledge sharing on:

  • Knowledge of UNFCCC processes and negotiations related to agriculture and food systems.
  • Assessing and monitoring climate impacts on agrifood systems.
  • Developing and implementing climate-resilient and climate-smart practices in crop production, livestock, fisheries, and aquaculture, focusing on sustainable water and land management solutions.
  • Leveraging climate finance for enhancing resilience in agrifood systems.

The series of events aims to build on a NENA community of practice on agriculture and climate change, to capacitate more actors to become part of transforming food systems in the region to become more resilient to climate change, keeping in mind the global commitment to the Paris Agreement.
