The Near East and North Africa (NENA) region signalled its growing engagement in global wildfire resilience efforts as Dr Mahmoud Fath-Allah, Secretary of the Council of Arab Ministers Responsible for the Environment (CAMRE) at the League of Arab States, joined international partners at the 30th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) (COP30). The event, “From Call to Action to Implementation: Scaling Fire Solutions through the Global Fire Management Hub,” co-organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Government of Brazil, highlighted how countries are turning commitments into concrete action through collaborative Integrated Fire Management (IFM).

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in collaboration with the Ministry of Production and Economic Resources – Department of Animal Resources, and in partnership with Education Above All Foundation, and with the support of Qatar Fund for Development, is launching a livestock restocking initiative in Al Jazirah to enhance the state’s food security situation and nutrition and rebuild the livelihoods of conflict-affected households amid the escalating humanitarian crisis.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) joined the Arab Parliament and the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States (LAS) in a regional workshop aimed at advancing Arab legislation to reduce food loss and waste across the region. The workshop convened representatives from regional and international organizations, including UN ESCWA, the Regional Food Banks Network, and the Arab Federation for Food Industries (AFFI), alongside members of the Arab Parliament, technical experts, and specialists in food security and sustainable development. FAO participated at a high level and contributed technical expertise to support regional efforts to strengthen sustainable agrifood systems.

three-day Regional Core Training on Livestock Emergency Guidelines and Standards (LEGS) was successfully held in Cairo, Egypt, from 11 to 13 November 2025. The event brought together 23 participants from nine countries across the Near East and North Africa region: Algeria, Iraq, Jordan, Mauritania, Morocco, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, and Yemen. Participants included government nominees, national veterinary staff, and FAO technical personnel, demonstrating a strong regional commitment to enhancing livestock emergency preparedness and response.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in collaboration with the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development (AOAD) and the Women Development Organization (WDO), convened a High-Level Regional Dialogue on Women’s Empowerment and Access to Finance for Advancing Circular Agriculture in the Arab Region, under the patronage of H.E. Prof. Saeb Khraisat, Minister of Agriculture of Jordan. The event brought together five ministers and high-level representatives from Ministries of Agriculture across the region, along with policymakers, development partners, financial institutions, private sector representatives, and women entrepreneurs from different countries to explore gender-responsive financing solutions that promote women’s leadership in sustainable and circular agriculture.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in cooperation with the Arab Society for Plant Protection (ASPP), successfully supported the organization of the 14th Arab Congress of Plant Protection, a five-day regional forum held in El-Harrach, Algeria, from 3–7 November 2025 under the theme “Plant Health for Sustainable Food Security.” FAO’s high-profile involvement, including keynote addresses, technical symposia, and coordination meetings, raised the visibility of plant health issues and catalyzed strategic outcomes in policy influence, knowledge exchange, and regional cooperation on transboundary plant pests and diseases.

The latest analysis of food insecurity and malnutrition in Sudan shows stark contrasts along conflict lines, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the World Food Programme (WFP) and UNICEF warned today. In areas where violence has subsided – allowing humanitarian access and market recovery – food security has begun to improve. But in conflict-hit locations that have been largely cut off from humanitarian assistance or under siege, famine has now taken hold. 

The agencies call for an end to hostilities and safe, unimpeded and sustained humanitarian access, which is urgently needed to prevent further loss of life and protect livelihoods.

 L’Organisation des Nations Unies pour l’alimentation et l’agriculture (FAO) et le Centre satellitaire des Nations Unies (UNOSAT) ont publié aujourd’hui une nouvelle analyse géospatiale, laquelle révèle que le secteur agricole de la bande de Gaza a subi de lourds dégâts qui ne font qu’empirer. Les conclusions de cette analyse font état d’une destruction généralisée des terres agricoles, des serres, des puits pour l’irrigation et d’autres infrastructures agricoles, autant de biens essentiels à la production alimentaire et aux moyens de subsistance. Dans l’ensemble, les éléments fondamentaux sur lesquels repose le secteur agricole de Gaza ont été dévastés. Toutefois, l’actuel cessez-le-feu laisse entrevoir la possibilité que l’on puisse commencer à restaurer la production alimentaire et les moyens de subsistance, à condition d’agir vite.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Regional Office for the Near East and North Africa (RNE) marked the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste (IDAFLW) 2025 on 23 October 2025 with a hybrid event held in Cairo under the global theme “365 Days of Action.” The event brought together representatives from governments, the League of Arab States (LAS), regional organizations, academia, and the private sector to exchange experiences and discuss innovative approaches to reduce food loss and waste in the region.

At least 5 000 smallholder farmers in the West Bank will soon receive real-time weather alerts directly to their smartphone as part of a climate-smart initiative from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). 

Funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF), the initiative is the first localized real-time weather alert system in the Near East and North Africa (NENA) region. It is implemented in partnership with the Palestinian Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), the Environment Quality Authority (EQA) and the Palestinian Meteorological Department (PMD).
