FAO captures the private sector contribution to the transformation of agrifood systems
An interactive dialogue is organized prior to the 37th session of the Near East Regional Conference
Prior to the Ministerial Segment of the 37th session of the Near East Regional Conference (NERC37), FAO is organizing an interactive dialogue with the private sector on “Engaging the Private Sector in Accelerating Agrifood Systems Transformation in the Near East and North Africa”.
The dialogue, which represents a unique opportunity to collaborate, share insights, and collectively shape the future of agrifood systems in the Near East and North Africa (NENA) region, is co-organized in collaboration with the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), the Islamic Corporation for the Development of the Private Sector (ICD) and the Group Business Forum (THIQAH).
“The role of the private sector is pivotal in driving the transformation of agrifood systems, particularly in our region. FAO convenes key actors of the private sector to discuss current and fundamental issues of sustainable food and agriculture in the region. Participants will be encouraged to establish partnerships, especially in the light of the current crisis and challenges,” said Abdulhakim Elwaer, FAO Assistant Director General and Regional Representative for the Near East and North Africa.
Including the private sector into the dialogue around agrifood system transformation, is gaining more importance considering that the sector has been widely recognized as a fully-fledged partner in driving sustainable development in a progressive manner. This is underlined by the FAO Strategy on private sector engagement that was adopted wo years ago and which, since then, has yielded positive results and impact.
This engaging session aims to bring together diverse stakeholders from small, medium, and large enterprises, regional organizations supporting the private sector such as the Union of Arab Chambers, the Islamic Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture, as well as regional financial institutions such as AGFUND, IFAD, IFC, ICD, to discuss and strategize collaborative efforts that will drive sustainable progress and accelerate the achievement of the SDGs within the region.
Private enterprises, ranging from small businesses to large firms, play a crucial role in introducing innovation, technology, and efficient practices throughout the entire agrifood value chain, fostering the creation of value-added products. By leveraging their resources, expertise, and market-driven approaches, the private sector can significantly contribute to increasing productivity, enhancing the resilience of farming communities, and ensuring sustainable agricultural practices.
Media are invited to attend the event. Please register and RSVP your attendance.
