FAO strengthens ties with Oman in the water sector

13 February 2023, Oman – The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations has stressed on the need to strengthen ties with Oman in the water sector in order to support the country’s efforts in water conservation and efficient use.

This came during FAO Assistant Director- General (ADG) and Regional Representative for the Near East and North Africa AbdulHakim Elwaer’s visit to Oman where he met with H.E. Saoud Alhabsi, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources of the Sultanate of Oman.

The meeting highlighted how FAO and Oman can strengthen their cooperation in the water sector. Discussions stressed the importance of FAO sharing its expertise in the field and increasing collaborations on different national projects by offering technical inputs and capacity building trainings. In addition, FAO’s inputs were welcomed to the nation’s water strategy. 

On the sidelines of Elwaer’s visit to Oman, he also visited the Agriculture Research Center and commended the center's activities in the country and its important role in the agriculture and livestock research sector.

The ADG also delivered a lecture titled "The Food Security Crisis and its Repercussions on the Region" at the National Defense College. The lecture highlighted the current challenges facing food security and its impact on the region, as well as possible solutions that can help alleviate the situation.
